Scientists in Sweden and Denmark have found age-related macular degeneration (AMD) sufferers commonly experience the complex visual symptoms of Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS).
The Scandinavian study revealed more than 30% of patients with AMD who visited visual rehabilitation centres had encountered the hallucinatory effects of CBS, while a review of 18 studies of 4303 patients, showed 15.8% of AMD patients had CBS.
CBS is characterised by the appearance of hallucinations in patients with impaired vision and was named after the Swiss scientist who first described the condition.
