Lecturer - School of Optometry & Vision Science

The School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS), part of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland, is the only Optometry school in New Zealand. We offer a 5-year Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom) programme which qualifies our graduates to practice optometry in New Zealand and Australia. As part of our programme we operate a full scope optometry clinic adjacent to the school.


The opportunity
We seek to appoint a Lecturer to teach into our BOptom programme and to conduct research in vision science. SOVS research covers a range of themes including paediatric optometry, imaging (of eye and brain), myopia, age-related eye disease, bioengineering, and basic visual neuroscience. As a Lecturer you will undertake postgraduate student supervision, teach undergraduates (including supervision in the clinic), and support wider-activities in the school and university.

The appointee
• Must hold a PhD in Optometry & Vision Science or a related discipline
• Must have a track record of research productivity evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals and ideally through successful application for competitive research funding
• Must hold a qualification recognised for registration as an Optometrist with therapeutic competencies in New Zealand
• Ideally experienced in facilitating student learning, assessing students’ work and evaluating course content and delivery

Optik Eyecare Pukekohe is looking for a full time dispensing optician or experienced optical assistant.


The position will consist of, pre & post testing to support 3 optometrists, frame & lens selection.


We are an independent optometry practice in Pukekohe, South Auckland providing excellent eye care in our purpose built building.

Our practice is clinically orientated, we also have a strong focus on fashion with a large retail gallery and an onsite lab. You will be working with an experienced team.

Optometrist needed - rewarding work with many advantages

The Low Vision Clinic, Burwood Hospital, Christchurch, has an opening for an optometrist.

This is a wonderful opportunity to work closely with the Eye Department in Christchurch, attend weekly CPD seminars and tutorials plus the Light House Vision Trust also regularly send clinicians, optometrists and/or OTs, to attend low vision meetings overseas (expenses paid).


The clinic works closely with Burwood’s Older Persons Health, The Spinal Unit, The Concussion Clinic and The OT Department as well as BLENNZ and the Blind Foundation. The Low Vision Clinic shares rooms with the Diabetic Screening Unit at Burwood which is also part of the Eye Department.

Dispensing Optician/Experienced Optical Assistant required

Optik Eyecare Pukekohe, South Auckland, is looking for a dispensing optician/optical assistant to join our team on a four month fixed contract to cover maternity leave. This is a shared full-time position.

You will be working with an experienced team, including three optometrists. Duties consist of pre- and post testing to support optometrists, frame and lens selection and supporting the lab technician.
We are an independent practice providing excellent eye care in our purpose-built building. Our practice is clinically orientated, we also have a strong fashion focus with a large retail gallery and an onsite lab. The contract to start July 2019.

An opportunity exists for an Optometrist at Specsavers New Lynn. This is a full-time position with an experienced team who place professionalism and customer service at the centre of their interaction with every patient.


Specsavers New Lynn offers comprehensive optometry support including pre-testing, modern equipment, training and continuing education.
