VR hope for dyslexics

A French orthoptist claims dyslexic children have achieved better visual attention and higher reading ability after completing word exercises using virtual reality (VR).

In collaboration with VR firm Scale-1 Portal, Rouen University Hospital orthoptist Charlotte Gibert used a wall in her office as a screen, plus 3D cinema glasses and a motion sensor, a combination she said makes work on complex visual areas more stimulating. Children read scrolling text with variations in speed and contrast, or might see words coming towards them and have to ‘jump into’ the ‘b’, ‘d’, ‘p’ or ‘q’ to help them differentiate them.

A patent has been filed for the ‘MoveR’ system, which is available via https://mover-vr.fr.
