The latest software upgrade for Heidelberg’s Anterion anterior segment platform is designed to deepen diagnostic insights and transform surgery planning, said Ophthalmic Instrument Company’s Tim Way.

Unveiled at the RANZCO NZ meeting in Wellington, the software makes Anterion a much more complete system, said Way, improving eyecare specialists’ cornea assessment abilities, especially for early diagnosis of keratoconus and identifying and monitoring corneal ectasia. “It is a free software update for those with the Anterion and it can be retrospectively applied to existing patient scans.”

Anterion unites the power of high-resolution swept-source OCT images and precise measurements in anterior segment examinations in one modular, upgradeable platform, said Heidelberg. The recent software upgrade includes three new clinical features, described as:

  • The ‘Epithelial thickness module’, with new parameters and colour maps to facilitate assessment of the epithelial thickness of a patient’s eyes, to assist clinicians in refractive surgery planning and treatment control, ocular surface evaluation, ectasia screening and other diagnostics
  • The ‘Ectasia view’, a comprehensive toolset that aids in the assessment of ectatic changes in the cornea, which now includes the SCORE (Screening Corneal Objective Risk of Ectasia) Analyser - a unique analysis tool for keratoconus and other ectatic diseases developed by Dr Damien Gatinel and Dr Alain Saad, from the Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgery Department at the Rothschild Foundation in Paris, France. “The incorporation of the SCORE Analyser into the Anterion Cornea App provides a modern method for screening for keratoconus and other ectatic diseases, allowing for a simple, efficient, yet objective assessment,” said Dr Gatinel
  • The Metrics App to automatically detect the scleral spur and calculate many biometric parameters to improve workflow and precise anterior chamber parameters
