Essilor Instruments has launched Idra X, a fully automated ocular-surface analysis platform designed to streamline dry-eye assessment in clinical practice.

Built on the Italian company SBM Sistemi’s IDRA platform, IDRA X combines voice guidance, automatic eye detection and auto-focus to reduce operator input and standardise image capture. EssilorLuxottica instruments director Paul Cumber said the system was developed to improve workflow efficiency, support delegation of testing and maintain consistent imaging quality.

Intended for both dry-eye screening and more detailed assessment, the platform includes tear-film analysis, symptom evaluation and infrared transillumination to provide enhanced meibomian gland visualisation. Results are presented in a format designed to help clinicians explain findings to patients and support management planning.

Essilor Instruments said Idra X can also suggest personalised next-step treatment options and connect with a patient smartphone app for home symptom management.
