Device Technologies: tackling waste, CO₂

Device Technologies reaffirmed its commitment to reducing surgical material and packaging waste with Oertli Instruments’ portable cataract surgical device, CataRhex 3.

While no confirmed figures are available yet, Device is on track to meet its target of halving the CO₂ emissions resulting from surgical materials, compared to a system employing single-use consumables, said Device’s Diego Sonderegger. “We believe it has the potential to make a significant contribution to reducing both the volume of surgical waste theatres produce and its associated effect on the environment.”

The ability to re-sterilise all the CataRhex 3’s consumables and instruments also reduces the running costs compared to market leaders, while its low weight and small footprint mean it’s suited to use in remote areas, said Sonderegger. The New Zealand surgeons who trialled the CataRhex 3 commented that the AC stability and overall performance of the system really stack up, he said.

Device Tech is also sourcing a larger stand to allow surgeons more tray space, which Sonderegger said should be available in the coming year.
