Reper’s prosthetic iris for traumatic aphakia and aniridia patients is now available in New Zealand via Medix21. The country’s first implantation was completed in Christchurch in December 2021.
The Russian company’s acrylic iris can be implanted in the capsular bag or in the sulcus, said Medix 21’s Camille Furnandiz. It includes an optical correction lens (from +0 to +40D) and is available in 1,200 off-the-rack colours and 300 iris patterns or can be supplied with a custom design.
According to the authors of a 2021 study by the University of Padova, Italy, Reper’s prosthetic minimises surgical procedures in the anterior chamber and prevents knot loosening and lens tilting.
“We’re thrilled to bring this technology to Aotearoa, providing patients with life-changing clinical and aesthetic outcomes,” said Furnandiz.
